The immediate action of maintenance personnel from DPWH-Lanao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office to release the built up pressure from a busted main water line averted a major accident from happening along a busy stretch of Tibanga national highway, this city.
Around 4:00pm, people started to notice water leaking through the asphalt overlay of the national highway prompting them to call local authorities. Upon learning of the water leak, Assistant District Engineer (ADE) Maria David dispatched maintenance teams to the area to inspect and assess the situation.
“When we got to the area, we were shocked to see that there was a huge bulge in the highway. The asphalt overlay has risen to about 8 to 10 inches. It was ready to explode,” narrated Maintenance Point Person Hadjinor Sukarno.
The DPWH team immediately coordinated with officials of the Iligan City Waterworks System (ICWS) to lower the water pressure in the area so the maintenance crew can slowly release the water pressure beneath the asphalt overlay.
“I am very grateful to the DPWH team led Engr. Sukarno for their prompt response to this emergency. Thank you DPWH-Lanao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office for the assistance especially to ADE David and District Engineer Ali,” expressed ICWS Head Josephus Albao.
Among the barangays affected by the reduced water pressure are Tubod, Ubaldo Laya, Pala-o, Villa Verde, Tibanga, Bagong Silang, San Miguel, Hinaplanon, San Roque, Sta. Felomina, and Acmac.
For his part, District Engineer Alykhan Ali assured the city government of Iligan that DPWH is ready and very much willing to extend its assistance anytime that ICWS calls on them.
“We’re all on this together. Iligan will suffer if there is shortage in water supply. As Iliganons and public servants we are here to serve the people of Iligan. Our help is available 24/7,” added District Engineer Ali. (VNL/DPWH-PIO)
