President Duterte visits wake of political rival Nograles

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MDN digital, May 6) – Despite being political rivals in the past in Davao City but President Rodrigo Duterte still found time and visited the wake of former House Speaker Prospero Nograles in Taguig City on Sunday night (May 5).

Nograles died of resperatory failure, secondary to pneumonia based on her medical bulletin, report said. His son Karlo also informed the media regarding the death of his father. He confirmed his father "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, the report also reads.

During the incumbency of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the late Nograles was the House Speaker from 2008 to 2010. He was also a former representative of Davao City.

The late Nograles was twice defeated when he ran for mayor against the Dutertes. In 1992, he ran for mayor but he lost to then incumbent mayor now President Rodrigo Duterte.

In 2010 he ran again for mayor. This time, he became the opponent of the president's daughter Sarah Duterte-Carpio. Again, Nograles was defeated by the presiential daughter, Sarah. 

The Nograleses and Dutertes were political rivals for more than 2 decades but when Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ran for the president in 2016, the Nograles family supported the Duterte Family and their rivalry ended, it was learned.

After President Duterte assumed office as President of the country, he also appointed Nograles' son, Karlo to the position of a Cabinet Secretary.

“His legacy as a leader who used his voice to speak on behalf of the Filipino people will continue to inspire other politicians and leaders who are committed to serving their countrymen,” the president told reporters in his speech.
