CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: An armed commuter, who introduced himself as a police officer, in a quarantine control point was killed Sunday in an alleged shootout with state police in Iligan City, 88 kilometers west of here.
In an phone interview with The Mindanao Daily News Tuesday, Police Maj. Marvin C. Cajegas, of the Iligan City Police Office, identified the fatality as Saidamen Baguan Decampong, of legal age, of Papandayan, Caniogan, Marawi.
Cajegas said that Decampong was wearing a PNP Bullcap and Camouflage jacket and brought out a pistol (hammer already opened) and introduced himself as a “Tropa” (a trooper).
The state police instructed Decampong to surrender his weapon but he refused to obey and stepped down from the vehicle and sprinted toward the village of Maria Cristina area.
Cajegas said that the PNP personnel boarded a vehicle at the checkpoint and chased the fleeing suspect.
He said that the police cornered Decampong at the vicinity of Purok 32, Zone 13, Maria Cristina, Iligan City and ordered him (Decampong) to surrender peacefully.
Instead of giving himself Decampong reportedly fired at the pursuing police who took cover on the vehicle and fired back hitting Decampong fatally, Cajegas said.
Recovered from Decampong were one 9 mm pistol, 29 pieces M16 fired cartridge case, two pieces 9mm fired bullet and one piece 9mm fired cartridge case.
Cajegas said that the victim’s parents alleged that Decampong has mental problem and alleged that the firearms might have been given by friends in Marawi City.
He said that a check on the victim’s background proved that Decampong was neither a member of the PNP nor of the Armed Forced of the Philippines. -0-
