PHO gears up for Filariasis-free LDN

From the 252,705 total target population, only 79,591 were dewormed and 173,114 still need to be dewormed as of January 2019.

Lanao del Norteobtained 31.49 percent accomplishment as of January 2019 based on the projected population in the province, says Richel Escatron of the Regional Health Office.

Deworming is so important because it helps to get rid of worms to enter the human body, Escatron added.

Department of Health (DOH) targets at least 85 percent deworming coverage but in Region 10 and Lanao del Norte has opted to set the target higher at 90 percent dewormed coverage.

Dr. Al Harvey Galorio, one of the barrio doctors said proper, good info drive will help to achieve the goal.

“We need to educate more especially parents because some of this (info) may be misunderstood. Some are afraid because of the effects and results after they take the med” Doc. Galorio added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Melania Untao, provincial health officer in Lanao del Norte, assured medicines are safe for everyone because these drugs are recommended for mass treatment by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are listed in the Philippine National Drug Formulary.

Provincial Health Office advised the public to wear long-sleeved shirt and long pants, and to always sleep under a mosquito net or use mosquito repellent to avoid getting the disease especially to those people working in farms or outdoors.

The meeting was composed of barrio doctors, municipal health nurses, public health nurses, Department of Education (Deped) nurses, midwives, staff from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and other agencies.

Filariasis is a mosquito-borne disease that causes parasitic worms to thrive in a person’s body.
