Oro, Misor LGUs defy DOH advisory on disinfection

THE local government units (LGUs) of Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City have opted to skip the Department of Health (DOH) advisory on disinfection for the protection of their own constitiuents.

It can be recalled that the DOH stated in an April 10 memorandum that “everyone should NOT spray or mist disinfectants at this time. Soak objects completely or disinfect surfaces directly to kill the virus.”

DOH added that doing so may even cause harm and additional health concerns, as it can cause pathogens to be dispersed further during spraying, result in skin irritation and inhalation of chemicals, and cause environmental pollution

Prior to the DOH advisory, the Misamis Oriental provincial government has installed misting tents in key areas of the province, including three at the capitol.

The city government of Cagayan de Oro has likewise started massive disinfection in public places such as markets and sidewalks in major thoroughfares.

Both have opted to continue such activities even after the issuance of DOH’s advìsory.

Initially, Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano wanted to heed the DOH’s call.

But provincial health officer Jerie Calingasan advised him that misting is necessary not just to stamp out COVID-19 but similar viruses and other bacteria as well.

In Cagayan de Oro City, Dr. William Bernardo of the city health department said their disinfection could not be a skin irritant to the public because it is done during curfew.

Bernardo also said the disinfection team are wearing chemical PPEs during their shift.
