Oro gov’t, HUDCC to build homes for 960 informal settler families

THE city government of Cagayan de Oro has inked Monday (March 25) an agreement with the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) for the construction of residential structures in barangay Balubal to be settled in by 960 families.

Mayor Oscar Moreno, who led the memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing in behalf of the city government, said the 960 families are the ones displaced by priority infrastructure projects of the government and informal settlers living in, near or along danger areas such as riverbanks, esteros, roadways, sidewalks, aqueducts, bridges, garbage dumps, shorelines and waterways.

A total of 40 buildings in 46,000 square meters of land in barangay Balubal will be constructed in the area with each building housing 24 units each.

Coined as BALAI, the said project will be in partnership with various developers as their balanced socialized housing compliance in close partnership with the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) as the regulating body for this engagement, according to city information officer Maricel Rivera.

BALAI stands for Building, Adequate, Livable, Affordable and Inclusive Filipino Communities, a program of HUDCC which is readying itself in transition for an impending Department of Human Settlements, the law that would create which is currently in final reading at the Lower House.

To date, the city government has recorded a total of 51,000 recorded informal settler families in the city, Rivera said.
