NPA squad surrender, 4 captured in Mindanao anti-insurgency drive

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: A seven-man squad of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered while another four were captured on separate military operations in North and Northeastern Mindanao over the weekend, a military report monitored from here said Monday.

The latest was a seven-man squad NPA rebel who surrendered to the elements of the army’s 30 Infantry Battalion based in Gigaquit, Surigao del Sur and led the military to an arms cached of high powered firearms and ammunitions, Lt. Benjamin Elisano De Dios, the 30IB spokesman said.

De Dios identified the surrenderer with only their Aliases as “Jerson,” Vice Squad Leader, “Daylan,’ Political Guide, “Gelai,” “JimJim,” “Robert,” “Remon,” and “Bernie,” all of the Guerilla Front16 C1 of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee or GF16 C1, NEMRC.
He said that the surrenderer also turned over high powered firearms hidden in an arms cached in the village of Tagbak in Carasscal, Surigao del Sur.
According to De Dios, the firearms consisted of two Ak-47, one 40mm Grenade Launcher, one Cal. 30 M1 Garand Rifle, one 9mm Submachine Gun, two magazines of AK 47, seven clips of  53 ammunitions for Cal. 30, one Anti-Personnel Mines,  and 14-foot electrical detonating wire.
In Misamis Oriental, state forces captured four NPA rebels identified as Marlon M. Acosta, a.k.a “Jonathan”, Marnie L. Berito,a.ka. ”Edward,” “Nelson R. Berito,” a.k.a “Lorence” and Jeffrey B. Macabecha, a.k.a. “,” all full-time members of Platoon Cherry Mobile, Huawei, Sub-Regional Committee 1, North Central Mindanao Regional Command.
Lt. Jefferson M. Mariano, of the army’s 58IB based in Claveria, Misamis Oriental, said that the captured NPA rebels were also comrades of the two NPA rebels who surrendered earlier and disclosed the arms cached of high powered firearms in the hinterlands of Salay, Misamis Oriental.
Mariano said that the arrested NPA rebels were turned over to the local police foe rhe filing of cases with violation of illegal possession and manufacture of firearms. -0-
