New isolation facility nears completion as COVID-19 cases rise in Iligan City

ILIGAN CITY, Aug 14 – As the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases continues to rise in this city, a generous philanthropist has partnered with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Lanao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office (LDN2 DEO) in constructing a 40-bed capacity isolation facility to accommodate active COVID-19 patients.

The sharp increase in COVID-19 cases is attributed by the local Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to local transmission cases triggered by returning Locally Stranded Individuals (LSI) and Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROF) who avoided quarantine or did not finish the mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

“There really is a need for additional isolation centers especially since existing facilities are starting to be filled up due to local transmission cases. COVID-19 patients need to be isolated from their families to prevent the spread of coronavirus among family members and in the neighborhood,” District Engineer Alykhan Ali explained.

Presently, the Iligan City government is renting three hotels to accommodate asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. For mild to moderate cases, patients are confined at the Iligan City Quarantine and Treatment Facility located at the former National Steel Corporation plant complex. Patients with severe symptoms are brought to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) in Cagayan de Oro City being the DOH-authorized COVID-19 treatment facility in Region 10.

The new isolation facility being built by DPWH-LDN2 DEO is located near the Brgy. Poblacion hall and right beside the breakwater facing Iligan bay.

“We are working double-time to finish this project within one week from the start of construction, knowing fully well that this facility is very important in our fight to stop the spread of coronavirus here in our city,” Engr. Ali said.

In addition to the new isolation facility, DPWH-LDN2 DEO also partnered with the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte in converting a section of its Kolambugan Provincial Hospital into an isolation facility. (VNL/DPWH-PIO)
