BY ASANGAN T. MADALE

MS JANIN ARENAS, a freshman student taking up Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship at the Mindanao State University College of Business Administration and Accountancy (Marketing Department) was buried yesterday at her hometown in Balabagan, Lanao del Sur.

She was put to her final resting place by her parents,  relatives,  friends and representatives from her department, enthusiastic students, and classmates. Arenas was one of the confirmed dead after a powerful explosion ripped through the  MSU  Dimaporo Gymnasium in  Marawi City, while in the middle of religious services.

According to her close friend who requested not to be identified for security reasons, the tragic incident during a Sunday Mass on December 3, 2023, has shaken everyone. “We mourn the loss of a vibrant and promising individual whose presence had already made a positive impact.”

Police authorities identified other dead  victims during the blast  as Junrey T. Barbante, Evangeline S. Aronin and Riza R. Daniel

They said that in this difficult time, “our thoughts and prayers are with Janin’s loved ones as they navigate through the pain of this heartbreaking loss, adding, may the memories of Janin’s, enthusiasm, determination and kindness serve as a source of strength for those who knew her. “Let us come together as a community to support one another in these times. May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find solace amid the tragedy.

A statement issued by the Marketing Department of CBAA furnished to the Manila Times stated, “Unfortunately in our department, we mourn the loss of Janin Arenas, a victim of the horrendous attack. It’s important to clarify that she was not a suicide bomber. One individual is awaiting surgery, and three others are injured. In the face of diversity, let us extend a caring hand in this battle. The teachings of Islam emphasize  the sanctity of  life  stating “Whoever kills an innocent person, it is as if he has killed  all of humanity (Quran 5:32)

We vehemently condemn this atrocious act and urge everyone to join us in ending the cycle of violence, the statement said.

The Department of Marketing Main Campus stands united in grief, seeking justice, protect and promote Peace, eradicate any forms of violence, and we offer our heartfelt sympathies to everyone affected by this devastating loss.

Meantime, MSU Marawi campus resumed classes yesterday (December 11,2023)  and academic activities by Memorandum  No. 294-OP, while the recent bombing incident on campus was significant, the administration, in consultation with relevant authorities, decided to resume regular operations to ensure the continuity of education for the students.

Professors shared photos of students attending classes in various colleges across the campus, like, College of Social Science and Humanities, the College of Education, College of Engineering, and other colleges,

In the wake of the recent tragedy, the university academic community demonstrated remarkable resilience. Students and faculty are returning to their studies and work, while those who need support are being directed to the university’s Mental Health and Psychosocial  Support Center either in person or via teleconference. These individuals are also excused from attending in-person classes until they feel ready, it was learned from the Office of the Presidential Management Staff (PMS)  Director Atty Rashid Pandi.

In an interview with Atty Rashid Pandi of PMS  said since last week more than 400 hundred students including some of their families have returned to the campus, adding Memorandum No 294-OP is being revised to address the needs of the students like the final examination would be scheduled next year January 2024, depending upon the recommendation of the members of the Academic Planning Committee.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Philippine National Police (PNP)  with the support of Local Government Officials are continuously conducting their operation within the campus, especially our school buildings using K-9 dogs to tighten the security for safe learning,  Police Officials said.
