Mindanao playwrights and actors will gather in Cagayan de Oro City on the first week of December to celebrate a festival of fresh one-act plays written by Mindanaoans.
“We would like to invite you to come and support Extra Virgin Lab Fest: Unang Puga from December 4-7 at Rodelsa Hall, Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro City,” reads a social media shout-out by our good friend Zip Mercado de Guzman who is better known here and abroad by his moniker “Filipino Baritone.
Zip will be directing “Banga” by Darren Bendanillo, his first time to direct a straight-play.
Joining Zip on stage will be actors from all over Mindanao in a first-of-its-kind theatre festival featuring narratives from Mindanao aimed at elevating the theatre experience in the island.
Organized by the Liceo Office of Cultural Affairs (LOCA) led by the indefatigable Hobart Savior as Festival Director, the project has been made possible by a grant from the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) which is seeking to open its annual Virgin LabFest in Manila to the regions.
Extra Virgin Labfest 2019: Unang Puga is also supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) through the National Committee on Drama, Writers Bloc, Liceo de Cagayan University, and Infinite Lotus Productions.
Performances will be held at Rodelsa Hall from December 5 to 7, 2019 with an opening gala scheduled at the same venue on December 4 featuring Dominique La Victoria’s “Ang Bata sa Drum” and Maynard Manansala’s “Dalawang Gabi.”
