Marawi Compensation Board Holds Dialogue to Address Concerns and Combat Misinformation

Marawi City – In a series of events held this week, the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) actively engaged with various stakeholders to provide updates, address concerns, and combat misinformation regarding their work.

On May 7th, the MCB, supported by Lombay Ka Marawi (LKM), held a dialogue with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at MSU-IPDM, Marawi City. The dialogue aimed to update CSOs on the MCB’s progress and answer their questions.

MCB Chairperson Atty. Maisara Dandamun-Latiph, alongside Board Members Dr. Dalumabi Bula, Engr. Mustapha Dimaampao, and Dr. Jamaica Dimaporo, addressed concerns raised by the CSOs. Key topics included the Fair Market Value (FMV) used for compensation calculations and other issues related to claims.

The MCB also held a separate dialogue on May 7th at MSU-IPDM with Barangay Chairpersons and representatives from the Most Affected Area (MAA). This session aimed to clarify the implementation of Republic Act 11696, the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act of 2022.

Discussions focused on the Fair Market Value (FMV) for properties, the handling of demolished structures, and other concerns regarding claims filed by victims of the 2017 Marawi siege.

The MCB continued its outreach efforts by holding a series of “Kumustahan” (dialogue) events on May 8th and 9th with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in temporary and permanent shelters in Marawi City and Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur. This activity coincided with the commemoration of the 7th Marawi Siege Anniversary.

Around 100 IDPs participated in the “Kumustahan,” including structure owners, business renters, house renters, sharers, and legal heirs of siege victims. The MCB facilitated discussions to address concerns and clarify the claims process.

A crucial focus of these events was combating the spread of misinformation about the MCB. Officials highlighted the negative impact of false information on the displaced community, which can heighten fear, anxiety, and uncertainty.

The MCB also reminded the IDPs that the deadline for filing compensation claims is July 3, 2024. Failure to submit an application by this date will result in forfeiture of the right to claim.

The Marawi Compensation Board’s commitment to open communication and clear information sharing is a positive step towards ensuring a fair and efficient compensation process for those affected by the 2017 Marawi siege.
