Sperm whale found in Davao

DAVAO REGION – Environmentalists are alarmed over the recent discoveries of mammoth sperm whales found dead in many shores in the Philippines.

This time, a big sperm whale was again found washed up on the shores in Davao region. The 60-foot (18.29-meter in length) dead whale was among the latest discoveries as of May 21, 2022, experts reported.

It was specifically found in the shore of Sitio Sakalig, Barangay Sugal in Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental.

This phenomenon where endangered mammals found only in high seas, are now washed up dead in in different seashores in the country, as well as in many parts of the world.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the lifeless body of the sperm whale, which was already emitting an obnoxious smell, had “multiple wounds” and would have been dead already when it reached the seashore in Davao region.

DENR’s Bagani Fidel Evasco, regional executive director of the regional office in Davao, has ordered the Penro to cordon off the place where the big mammal was found, considering the obnoxious smell of the dead carcass.

Evasco said the dead sperm whale should be disposed of immediately as its smell is already alarming to the health of the people in the community.

“The carcass should be disposed of immediately because its smell can be toxic and hazardous to the community,” he said.
