Lawmaker to politicians: Don’t meddle in ‘Ayuda’ distribution

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Politicians should not meddle in the distribution of (AYUDA) financial assistance for the 377,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in the country, a lawmaker said Friday.

Deputy Speaker and Cagayan de Oro City Cong. Rufus Rodriguez, issued the statement following the decision of the Commissions on Election (COMELEC) to allow the distribution of P 6,500 financial aid to PUV drivers in the country.

Rodriguez said that the funds are intended to help the public transportation sector to cope with the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, aggravated by the  soaring fuel prices brought about by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He said that the release of the funds by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to the intended beneficiaries should not be considered as election campaign spending.

“It is, LTFRB, a government agency that is giving the money to PUV drivers and any politician should not be allowed to meddle or be associated with the distribution of the funds,” Rodriguez said..According to LTFRB data, as of April 5 when the distribution was stopped, only 110,200 out of the over 377,000 intended beneficiaries have received the Ayuda.

Rodriguez said that many of PUV drivers in Cagayan de Oro City and Northern Mindanao still have to be given their financial assistance. -0-
