Lanao del Norte’s COVID-19 testing lab undergo assessment

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte, Aug. 20 (PIA) – A team from the Department of Health (DOH) Region 10 Regulation, Licensing and Enforcement Division inspected on Wednesday, August 19, the newly-completed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) testing laboratory of the provincial government of Lanao del Norte located at the Old Kapatagan Provincial Hospital.

The assessment aims to check the readiness of the molecular laboratory to conduct the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing of suspected COVID-19 cases in the province.

Dr. Cheryl Balane, division chief of DOH-10 Regulation, Licensing and Enforcement Division, said they are conducting the inspection and assessment per authorization and on behalf of the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine.

She said the assessment covered not only the physical layout and equipment but also the manpower complement, workflow, and management system, among others.

Once accredited, Balane said the laboratory will become the biggest RT-PCR laboratory and the first to be owned and operated by a local government unit in Northern Mindanao.

Balane also lauded the provincial government for the establishment of the laboratory and closely coordinating with the DOH-10 for technical assistance to fast track the requirements for accreditation.

Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda “Angging” Quibranza-Dimaporo said the testing laboratory costs approximately P30 million and that the budget came from President Duterte’s Bayanihan Grant. (APB/PIA ICIC)
