It was a showcase of ethnic street dancing “Ikat-Ikat Ta Dadalanen,” coupled with a grandiose and mesmerizing ethnic float parade and the spectacular ground tableau competitions. KAAMULAN 2016 was witnessed by thousands of foreign, domestic, and local tourists from all over Mindanao and the Philippines as well.
Now on its 39th year of annual festivities, KAAMULAN 2016 is considered as the oldest and the most spectacular ethnic festivals of the country today. KAAMULAN is a LUMAD word for “amol-amol” meaning “gathering” and it is an ethnic cultural festival of the seven (7) Hill Tribes of Bukidnon for thanksgiving to THE MAGBAYAYA (deity)) for their rich annual harvest and blessings. KAAMULAN FESTIVAL is the convergence of the seven hill tribes: Matigsalog, Tigwahanon, Umayamnon, Manobo, Bukidnon, Talaandig and the Higaonon.
Clad in colorful ethnic cultural costumes, the participants gave their best in their striking street dancing performances. Street dancing showcased the rich culture, heritage and tradition, the tribes’ saga of struggles against local invaders (human and nature) translated into different steps with props as their way of life such as harvesting, protecting their tribes, planting, river fishing, courting, protection against diseases and calamities and their thanksgiving to the MAGBABAYA. Their tribal floats were fantastic and it speaks of their traditions, rich culture and heritage translated into a scenic view which is beyond the capacity of human describing.
The crowd was mesmerized by the performances of the eleven (11) contingents coming from the Municipalities with their respective tribe performances: Lantapan- Talaandig, Sumilao-Higaonon, Libona-Higaonon, San Fernando-Tigwahanon, Kibawe-Pulangihon Manobo, Pangantucan-Manobo, Quezon-Manobo, Valencia-Bukidnon/Manobo, Malaybalay-Bukidnon, Dangcagan-Manobo, and Kalilangan-Manobo.
For the grandiose Float Competition Parade-Valencia City was adjudged the Grand Champion, followed by the Municipality of Lantapan-1st Runner Up and Malaybalay City-2nd Runner Up. For Ikat-Ikat Ta Dadalanen-Street Dancing-the Grand Champion went the the Municipality of San Fernando, 1st Runner-Up Municipality of Lantapan and 2nd Runner Up-the Municipality of Kibawe. For coveted Ground Competition Championship Trophy-went the Municipality of Kalilangan, 1st Runner Up-Valencia City and the 2nd Runner Up went to the Municipality of San Fernando.
Tourism Czar Regional Director Catalino ‘Butch’ E. Chan 111 of the Department of Tourism (DOT 10) was the KAAMULAN Special Guest along with invited guests and personalities from the Region. Director Chan 111 brought along with him photographers and media men to cover the grandiose event.
AT A GLANCE – In a interview, the Hon. Governor Jose Maria R. Zubiri, Jr., told Business Week Mindanao that KAAMULAN Festival has been in existence for the last 39 years, as a Festival of thanksgiving by the 7 Hill Tribes of Bukidnon to the MAGBABAYA (deity) for year’s bountiful harvest ad blessing. Furthermore, Governor Zubiri added that the Festival speaks of the conservation and preservation of the Arts, Heritage and Culture of the LUMADS of Bukidnon Province.
Governor Zubiri, Jr., considers himself a Lumad at the Province of Bukidnon since the time he settled in this rich land and bounty forty three (43) years ago. He has served Bukidnon for the last twenty eight (28) years as credible and dynamic public official. He is part and partial of its development as he worked hand in hand with the people. He was one of those who started BUKIDNON SUGAR MILLING COMPANY (BUSCO) and transformed Bukidnon into a Sugar Milling Country wherein more people were employed and the rest is history for its continued growth and development. He said that forty three (43) ago the total population of Bukidnon was only 300,000 with less transportation and it will take the (10) to reach Malaybalay and Valencia from any point of destination. After 43 years, Bukidnon economic landscape had changed. It has 1.320 Million population with 250,000 families.
A MAN OF VISION-Governor Zubiri has helped the province in developing the vast agricultural lands. To date, in terms of economic growth nine (9) multi- national companies like DOLE, DEL MONTE and other big players in the industry are into pineapple and banana plantation which comprise 42,000 hectares are planted to these commodities. Biggest portion of the land of Bukidnon is planted is planted to CORN and 70,000 to 75,000 hectares and planted to SUGAR and RICE ranks # 3 in vast land plantings of the area.
Incidence of poverty is little by little being arrested by the Province through the dynamism of Governor Jose Maria R. Zubiri, Jr. More developments are in the offing for the progress of Bukidnon. In the future, construction of hotels, amenities, improved and modern terminals of the municipalities will soon be seen as he will be given another three (3)years mandate by the people as a Governor of the Province of Bukidnon.
In a concerted effort, together with the Local Executives of the different municipalities, it is assured the continued support in the CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES (IPs) of BUKIDNON will have concrete results and they are part of the big booming development of BUKIDNON MY HOME.
