QUAKE JOLTS ORO!
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – 10:38PM : A quake with strong intensity jolted Cagayan de Oro City and elsewhere in Mindanao.
Based on the Earthquake Intensity Meter of the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology Services (Phivolcs) installed at the Cagayan de Oro City Hall, it registered Intensity 4 magnitude. It occured around 10:38pm tonight, June 14th. It was later followed with a slower quake a few minutes after.
But according to Phivolcs, the epicenter of the quake was recorded 9 kilometers northwest of Kadingilan, Bukidnon, and it has an Intensity 5.9 magnitude, and it was techtonic in origin, which would mean the people should not worry about upcoming tsunamis.
Regional Director Marcial Labininay of Phivolcs regional office 10 also confirmed to reporters that it was techtonic in origin and usually cannot threaten big tsunamis like what happened many times in Japan, and it killed thousands of Japanese and destroyed billions of properties in said country.
Labininay said in Kadingilan it registered a 5.9 strong Intensity. However the local disaster councils have not reported damages as of press time.
In Cagayan de Oro City’s Teleperformance Company, one of the biggest BPO companies in Northern Mindanao, call center agents scampered for safety and run to the ground floor to take safer grounds outside of the multi-floors building at the downtown area, particularly near the biggest malls in Cagayan de Oro.
Nick Jabagat, chief of the City Disaster Risk Management Department advised workers in tall buildings in the city to stay calm during occurences of quakes to avoid more harm.
“Atong gihangyo ang katawhan nga dili lang magpanic aron dili sila madisgrasya na hinoon. Kadaghan naman kita nag earthquake drills so kabalo nani ang mga trabahante kung unsay buhaton kung moabot ang katalagman susama niining linog,” the CDRMD chief said.
