Indonesian media says China’s Sinovac scientist died of suspected covid-19

INDONESIA – The media in this country reported that, China’s lead scientist for Sinovac vaccine trials, has been suspected to have died of covid-19 on Wednesday (July 7).

China’s lead scientist for Sinovac trials in Indonesia, Novilia Sjafri Bachtiar, has been tagged as among the fatalities of the increasing covid deaths in the country.

Sinovac was most-widely used vaccine in Indonesia according to Kumparan News Service. The said news service also reported that Novilia has died of the deadly virus.

The Sindonews, who has quoted an official of the state-owned BioFarma pharmaceuticals company, saying that Novilia has been buried according to the protocols of Covid-19.

Menwhile, Erick Thohir, State enterprise minister in his message over instagram said that he mourns the sudden loss of the good vaccine scientist.     

Novilia was connected with BioPharma, which is making the Sinovac vaccine in Indonesia. “She was lead scientist and head of dozens of clinical trials done by BioFarma, including COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials in cooperation with Sinovac,” he said.

BioFarma was asked to comment on the death of the lead scientist for Sinovac vaccines in Indonesia but did not respond on the request. Novilia was on her early 50s at the time of her death.

Many health workers died in Indonesia aside from the fact that they have already received Sinovac vaccines, and this situation left some questions regarding the effectiveness of Sinovac vaccines.

Based on the revelations of an independent group Lapor Covid-19, there were over 131 healthcare workers who are mostly vaccinated of the Sinovac vaccines, have died since June.
