MANOLO FORTICH, Bukidnon, Sep. 26 (PIA)—Reflective of Hedcor’s commitment to sustainable development is its reforestation activities in the Municipality of Manolo Fortich. Being one of the pioneers for Cleanergy, AboitizPower’s brand for clean and renewable energy, Hedcor has seen its responsibility to champion environmental efforts.
As such, Hedcor had already launched its reforestation activities three years prior to its construction in 2016.
From its small beginnings of 2,000 seedlings planted in 2013, Hedcor has since scaled its reforestation activities twenty-fold. As of 2020, Hedcor has planted about 400,000 seedlings with an 87 percent survival rate in various identified reforestation areas in Manolo Fortich. This covers over 800 hectares of land.
More than just the numbers, Hedcor’s reforestation efforts are also strategic and planned accordingly. First, the trees planted are ensured to be endemic to the area. As such, the trees are well-adapted to local climate conditions and would have the best chance of survival. They would also provide a habitat for endemic species.
To maximize reforestation activities, Hedcor also partners with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to help identify reforestation sites, as well as catchment areas wherein water, seeped down by trees, flows directly into Hedcor’s water reservoir to aid in renewable energy generation.
To support local livelihood, Hedcor includes fruit-bearing trees as well. Hedcor also employs Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) where communities are rewarded for the services rendered in support of Hedcor’s reforestation efforts.
For 2021, Hedcor has set a reforestation project target of planting 100,000 seedlings in areas of Brgy. Guilang-guilang, Guihean, and Santiago. This will add to Hedcor group’s reforestation milestone of 3 million trees planted as of 2020, having started their group wide tree planting activities in identified areas of North Luzon and Mindanao in the early 2000s.
Hedcor is a run-of-river hydropower arm of AboitizPower. It currently operates its largest Mindanao-based hydropower facilities in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon through the Manolo Fortich 1 and 2 Hydros. (Hedcor-AboitizPower/PIA Bukidnon)
