CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: More than 500 families in Butuan City’s flooded areas were evacuated to higher grounds due to heavy rains spawned by tropical storm “Dante” this week, the military said.
A military report reaching here Friday said that 11 villages, mostly located in Butuan City’s southern outskirts were flooded prompting 575 families to move to safer grounds.
Lt. Angel Grace Sabelina, the spokesperson of the army’s 28IB, based in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, said that the relief, rescue and recovery operations started three days ago until Friday.
“While some families returned to their houses, a number of evacuees remained at the evacuation centers assigned by the local gocernment units,”she said.
In a telephone interview with the Mimdanao Daily News Friday, Sabelina said that there were no reports of fatalities while assessment about damages on crops and properties continues.
Although, the tropical storm “Dante” passed through Mindanao’s eastern seaboard on June 1 without making a landfall, it left a heavy load of rains along its trail in eastern Mindanao resulting in the flooding of lowland areas. -0-
