Group condemns shooting of broadcaster in Tagum

TAGUM City–The Mindanao Investigative Journalists' Alliance, Inc. (MIJAI) condemned the shooting of a broadcast journalist here last October 11.

The 54-year-old Paterno Lacbayao Pacquiao, also known as Pat Lucero, sustained wound on his back near his right shoulder after a gunman shot him.

The report said that before reaching his house in Visayan Village, Tagum City, from his morning radio program on October 11 at Radio sa Masa 99.9 FM, a station that he also owned, a gunman approached him. The victim immediately bent on and turned his car hitting his shoulder.

Last July, this year, he was appointed by the newly elected Davao del Norte Governor Edwin I. Jubahib as head of PICKMO or, the Provincial Information, Communication, Knowledge and Management Office.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Tagum and is now in good condition.

Lt. Col. Ariel Acala, Tagum City police chief, said Pacquiao, when interviewed by the police, could not cite any probable motive on the attempt on his life.

“He has not received any threat prior to the incident. We also have no record of him reporting any threat to his life,” Acala said.

The attack on Pacquiao came as journalists in Davao del Norte were preparing for a fun shoot on Friday in celebration of Press Freedom Month.
