Govt troop wounded in clash with Reds

ILIGAN City–An Army soldier was wounded in an encounter with a group of armed men around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday (July 25) in Sitio Duwa-duwa in Barangay Rogongon near the boundary of Barangay Panoroganan this city.

The Army troops were having their regular Community Support Program (CSP) when the encounter happened.

Col. AlexAduca, deputy commander of the Army’s 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, identified the wounded soldier as Sgt. Marvin Belen, CSP team leader of the 51st Infantry Battalion.

The CSP team is assisting a “geographically isolated and disadvantaged area” where residents “are being influenced and exploited by members of the New People’s Army” according to Aduca.

“They (NPA) are recruiting and hiding in the area. Some are even operating like they extort the residents. Our troops are there to counter the rebellious activities,” Aduca said in an interview.

The wounded soldier was hit on his foot but in a stable condition as of this interview.

The government forces are in a pursuit operation against the armed men and is still validating if there are casualties in the side of the enemies.
