Goking bats for creation of anti-scam task force

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – City Councilor George Goking on Thursday (March 28) batted for the creation of the anti-scam task force that would monitor and go after unscrupulous individuals scamming the internet with their very impossible offers.

As chair of the city council committee on trade and commerce, he expressed alarm on the reported increasing number of city residents victimized by online investment scams as well as ponzi schemes. "We need to have an Anti-Scam Task Force!," the city councilor pointed out.

Goking claimed Ponzi and other online investment scams proliferating in the city, and the scammers are also using Facebook to lure unsuspecting individuals. He also reported to the committee of the recent events that shocked the city residents as many of their friends have been secretly investing millions of their money to these scammers.

In March of this year, he said that four alleged “scammers” were arrested after a commotion in Barangay Kauswagan. About 100 “investors” were allegedly swindled involving an amount of over P80 million. Cases have already been filed before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), he said.

The councilor called for a meeting with regional directors of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), and City Price Monitoring Council, among others, for updates and to discuss measures to address this.

Councilor Goking lamented that even if warnings were already issued to the public about these scams, many still fall prey to such fraud.

“We warned people and they refused to listen,” he cited, as he asked the different agencies what else the city could do to prevent this.

“This is not a joke. If it is happening in Cagayan de Oro, it must be happening in the whole country,” he added.

Aside from the creation of the task force, councilor Goking said the matter would be brought to President Rodrigo Duterte through a resolution.
