God of death giant asteroid to meet Earth in 10 years

A giant asteroid with a total measurement of 1,100-foot-wide is expected to meet Earth in 2029. Code named 99942 Apophis, the name was derived from a Greek name for an Egyptian serpent swallowing the sun, the NASA reported.

However, NASA assured that there's no need to worry, though. The giant Apophis is going to miss the earth by a wide margin of approximately 19,000 miles. But NASA said its size as well as its close distance to Earth will mean that this will give special moments with some scientists and astronomers.

Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at NASA said the Apophis reported close approach in 2029 will be an amazing opportunity for science. "It's relatively rare for such a large object to pass so close to Earth."

She said this giant asteroid can be seen through telescopes and radar. "With radar observations, we might be able to see surface details that are only a few meters in size." Apophis can also be visible to the naked eye maybe through a bright spot of light.

"As the asteroid passes over the Atlantic ocean, its path briefly turns from red to grey — that is the moment of closest approach. After closest approach, the asteroid will move into the daytime sky and will no longer be visible," NASA's model revealed.

Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near Earth Objects Studies said "Apophis is a representative of about 2,000 currently known potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs)."By observing Apophis during its 2029 flyby, we will gain important scientific knowledge that could one day be used for planetary defense."
