CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Local police on Saturday nabbed an alleged rebel returnee who was reported to be once a “Sparrow” assassin in the killing of a village councilor here in 2021.

Village Councilor Roland Sherwin “Tawee” Uy, 45, of  Carmen,  Cagayan de Oro City, was gunned down together  with his caretaker Samuel Pabalan, 73, in a quarry-rich village of Pagatpat, this  city, on Nov. 21, 2021.

The son of then Congressman, now Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando “Klarex’ Uy, the Uy family and friends from the local business community then raised a P 12 million bounty for the arrest of the culprits.

Armed with a warrant of arrest, operatives from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) collared Edgardo O. Gaabucayan, 59, in his residence in Purok-6, Cabasagan, Lala, Lanao Del Norte Saturday.

COCPO police said that the suspect did not resist arrest.

Police investigators said that prior to his surrender, Gaabucayan, was an alleged  member of the dreaded “Sparrow Unit,” an assassin of the outlawed  New People’s Army (NPA), operating in Zamboanga Del Norte.

In a talked with the Mindanao Daily News (MDN), Maj. Ivan Viñas, the COCPO Police spokesperson, said that the motive for the shooting of Uy was reportedly “personal grudge.”
