CLAVERIA, Misamis Oriental–The alleged medical officer of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter with government troopers in the hinterland village of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, the military reported Sunday.
Lt. Col. Ricky Canatoy, the commander of the army’s 58IB based here, said that the remains of Brenda Serenio, 24, a.k.a ‘Cyrel’, was recovered days after the armed encounter took place on August 13, 2020.
He said that Serenio was among the 20 rebels from the NPA’s Sub-Regional Committee of the North Central Mindanao Regional Command (NCMRC) who engaged in a firefight with the patrolling government troopers in the hinterlands of Bal-ason, Gingoog City, two days ago.
Canatoy said that the abandoned remains of Serenio along with medical supplies, 13 bags of rice, solar panel charger, landmines, radio, personal belongings and subversive documents was recovered by pursuing government troopers.
Serenio, who was recovered with her M16 rifle and several rounds of ammunition, is a resident of Balingasag, Misamis Oriental and not of Sitio Kamansi, Banglay, Lagonglong, a hotbed of communist rebels in Misamis Oriental.
Serenio’s cadaver was brought to funeral homes in Gingoog City to give her a decent burial and for the proper turnover to her family.
The 58IB wish to extend condolences to the bereaved family of Serenio, while urging the “wounded” NPA rebels to come down for medical treatment to spare their lives, Canatoy said.
He said that the 58IB assures the security and safety of the wounded NPA rebels who would avail of medical assistance in addition to assisting them to avail of all benefits extended to returning NPA rebels.
