GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MDN Mindanao News, June 25) – A leader of a non-government organization (NGO) has revealed Monday that President Rodrigo Duterte is not supporting the programs and advocacies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities all over the country.
Chi Laigo-Vallido, program director for Forum for Family Planning and Development said the president is the one who is not supporting the country’s growing maturity and awareness towards sexual preferences and diversity.
She told the media that “For a leader who once headed a city (Davao) who has a gender and development code since 1997 and started pioneering strategies in integrating gender and development in various LGU programs, I am saddened that President Duterte is himself the one who does not support the country’s growing maturity towards sexual diversity.”
Vallido said the pending anti-descrimination bill intends to prevent acts of descrimination affecting the LGBT community. She cited the pending SOGIE or sexual orientation and gender identity and expression or the anti-discrimination bills that is still pending in Congress, as lacking the total support of government officials and politicians in the country.
The NGO director said Mindaonons are not even supporting the call as only two of the island’s 27 provinces and also two of its 33 cities supported the anti-discrimination by passing ordinances.
During a forum, Vallido disclosed that only Davao City, Butuan City and the provinces of Dinagat Island and Agusal del Norte have passed ordinances upholding the rights of LGBT communities.
She challenged Pres Duterte to lead the national commitment even as he also cited Duterte’s “poor tolerance against the LGBT people.
The LGBT community is celebrating and observing the month of June as “June Pride” month.
Just recently, the president reportedly invoked homosexuality, which other people construed as implying weaknesses on his rivals in politics, including the catholic church and the communist rebels in the country, allegedly pointing to the New People’s Army (NPA).
He said that there is cure being “gay.” In fact, she claimed that his ultimate critic and nemesis, Senator Antonio Trillanes as being gay. ###
