DPWH constructs additional isolation facilities

ILIGAN CITY, Aug. 19 (PIA) – After just completing the isolation facility in Brgy. Poblacion, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Lanao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office (LDN2 DEO) is constructing again isolation facilities in barangays Acmac and Tomas Cabili, both in this city.

In the past few weeks, Iligan City has seen a surge of COVID-19 cases, prompting local officials to request the National COVID-19 Inter-Agency Task Force to place Iligan City under an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). The request however was not heeded as Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, declared last Saturday night that all of Mindanao’s 27 provinces and 33 cities will be under MGCQ from August 16 to 31.

On Monday, Iligan’s Emergency Operation Center (EOC) Health Cluster reported 18 new cases, the highest so far, with 17 of these cases due to local transmission.

“We do not want our healthcare facilities to be overwhelmed with these new COVID-19 cases. We need our doctors and medical personnel to focus more on patients who have mild to moderate symptoms. For those who are asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms, they can stay in our new isolation centers so their families will be safe and the patients will have a decent and comfortable place to finish their isolation period,” explained District Engineer Alykhan Ali.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar has classified COVID-19 facilities as urgent projects following the recent announcement of the Department of Health that hospital bed occupancy for coronavirus and non-coronavirus beds is now at “warning zone” nationwide.

On Tuesday, members of the Iligan Inter-Agency Task Force (Iligan IATF) led by FCI Butch Baulete, visited the identified sites to evaluate its suitability for an isolation center.

“Initially, I was apprehensive that our barangay might be stigmatized because of our acceptance of COVID-19 patients.  However, when DPWH District Engineer Alykhan Ali explained the importance of this facility, we began to see the impact of this project  in our fight against the pandemic”, said Brgy. Acmac Chairwoman Juvilyn Claveria. (VNL/DPWH-PIO)
