DOST XI Lights Up Marilog with Solar-Powered Street Lights

A total of 55 units of solar-powered street lights were donated by the Department of Science and Technology Region XI (DOST XI) to Barangay Salaysay in Marilog District, Davao City, to light up the unelectrified parts of the barangay.

The activity is part of the Agency’s goal to empower the poor and marginalized sectors and improve their quality of life by slowly alleviating poverty under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology program.

For many years, a large part of the community relies on gasera lamps, candles, and flashlights to light their houses and tracks when traveling at night.

Jeorge Elvilo, a farmer from the area, said that this will really help students and farmers because it will make them feel safer at night, especially since the roads are not yet developed.

“Gusto namo na naay taga gobyerno na maghatag ug benepisyo apil atong mga naa sa sulod kay apektado ang mga residente, apil ang mga estudyante (We really wanted the government to provide benefits including those in the secluded areas because the residents and students are affected)”, he added.

Barangay Chairman Roberto Itdang, Sr. said that he is genuinely grateful to DOST XI for extending help to the Lumad brothers and sisters in the area by providing street lights.

“Kaning mga sitio diri waa gyud ni posibilidad na maabtan ug kuryente sa Davao Light. Mao nang sila gyud mag benepisyo ani labi na sa mga estudyante na didto nagpuyo, (It’s very unlikely that the sitios here will be reached by Davao Light (Power Company). Hence, they will really benefit from these (solar lights) especially the students),” Mr. Itdang added.

In 2021, DOST XI, through the Davao City Science and Technology Center in partnership with the Ateneo de Davao University, installed a Solar Photovoltaic System in the Barangay Hall of Salaysay, which served as an emergency source of electricity and reduced the cost of electricity at the barangay.
