CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno on Friday noon confirmed the detection of the virulent “Delta Variant” in this premier capital and appealed for sobriety among the city residents.
Moreno made the confirmation after Malacañang announced the degrading of the city’s Moderate Enhance Community Quarantine (MECQ) to Enhance Community Quarantine (ECQ) as recommended by the Department of Health (DOH).
He said that under ECQ, stricter border measures would take place effective Friday while the public transport in the city would be closely monitored.
In a press briefing that lasted past 3 p.m. Friday, Moreno appealed for sobriety and asked the people to cooperate by restricting their movements outside their homes as health officials scrambled to heightened the contact tracing of the Delta Variant COVID-19 individuals.
Dr. Joselito Retuya, the city’s epidemiologist and contact tracing czar, said that they have identified the infected “Delta Variant COVID-19” individuals.
Moreno said that the Delta Variant patients should be confined in a specially designed isolation center to prevent them from spreading the virus.
Health officials said that the Delta Variant are locally acquired, which means that the virus has mutated.
There is also the possibility that a returning overseas worker might have brought the virus that mutated in their system, the health official said.
The DOH issued a statement Friday morning that 11 cases of Delta Variant virus has been detected in the country, six of them were from Northern Mindanao.
“They are here and we are closely monitoring them, referring to the “Delta Variant” infected patients, although they were already fully recovered,” Retuya said during the press conference Friday.
The national Inter Agency Rask Force (IATF) has declared Cagayan de Oro City under MECQ from July 16, 2021 until July 31, 2021, but was abruptly changed to ECQ Friday noon.
The detection of the Delta Variant by the DOH in Manila actually took place on June 28, 2021 through samples of COVID-19 virus taken from COVID-19 positive patients, which were studied and reviewed by Geneticist, Retuya said. -0-
