This shows that the fatal attack of the dreaded covid-19 is not a joke and it does not choose whether you are rich or poor, low profile man in the streets or high profile politician in society.
As the ‘killer virus’ continues to wreck havoc in Mindanao, this time it took the life of veteran politician Governor Douglas Cagas of Davao del Sur. He was 77 when covid chance upon him and attacked him until he died.
Governor Cagas succumbed to death this morning of June 10. His untimely demise was confirmed by his immediate family in a statement released by the province today.
The statement reads: “It is our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Governor Douglas ‘Dodo’ Cagas this morning, owing to COVID complications. He has joined his Creator in heaven.
Cagas’ medical bulletin showed he died around 5am at the Medical Center for Digos Cooperative Hospital in Digos City.
The governor’s remains was immediately brought to Davao City for cremation, according to Sherwin Cesar, the provincial information officer.
On June 3, the governor was admitted at the hospital after he was confirmed contracted with the killer virus and he became very ill the succeeding days while in the hospital.
His son, Marc Douglas IV was also positive of the coronavirus disease and also treated at the hospital but he was reportedly recuperating.
“Despite the governor’s age, he was still physically capable and he even jogged daily,” the provincial spokesperson said.
POLITICAL DYNASTY IN DAVAO
The late governor started the Cagas political dynasty in the province. His wife Mercedes is the congresswoman, while his son Marc was the vice governor. By law of succession, Marc will replace his father’s vacated position as provincial governor of Davao del Sur.
Governor Cagas became an assemblyman in the 80s. He also serves as a congressman from 1998 t0 2007. He was elected governor in 2007 until 2013. He won as governor again in 2016 until his death. He was serving his fifth when covid attacked and killed him in the process.
