Customs seizes P44M ‘hot’ goods in CDO port


CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Northern Mindanao seized smuggled agricultural products worth P 44 million for the month of July 2022 alone, a customs official said Monday.

Oliver A. Valiente, Chief of the BOC10 intelligence division, said that the contraband were all imported from China declared as Apples and Oranges but were actually Onions and Carrots.

The latest of the seizures in the Port of Cagayan de Oro City was on Friday when an item consigned to Primex Export and Import Producer declared as “Tortilla Wrappers” turned out to be Onions valued at P18 million.

According to Valiente, the BOC in Northern Mindanao initially seized illegally imported onions and carrots valued at P 5 million followed by another P 21 million worth of hot goods prior to the seizure of the P 18 million illegally imported onion products Friday

Valiented said that the seized products were not fit for consumption because it has not undergone “pytho sanitary” clearance prior to port entry here.

The confiscated products were thrned over to the Department of Agricukture (DA) for proper disposal, he said.

He said that the BOC 10 in Northen Mindanao covers the port of Cagayan de Oro and the sub-ports of Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental, Iligan City and Ozamis City in Misamis Occidental.

Valiente said that the illegal agricultural shipments were all seized in the sub-port of Tagoloan, an industrial town where the Mindanao International Container Terminal (MICT) port is located.
