Customs seizes P15M imported veggies

BY GERRY LEE GORIT

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Assorted imported vegetables estimated to be worth P15 million were confiscated by Bureau of Customs-10 (BOC-10) authorities Thursday, July 7, 2022, after these were flagged for being wrongfully declared.

According to the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), the vegetables were placed inside five container vans with China as country of origin.

BOC-10 said the shipment was declared as “autolysed yeast in powder form,” but actually contained red onions, white onions and carrots.

“The shipments consigned to Primex Export and Import Producer which arrived from China on July 02, 2022 were declared as ‘Autolysed Yeast in Powder Form,’” said Oliver Valiente, CIIS chief for Northern Mindanao.

Contrary to its declaration, the shipments were found to contain red onions, white onions, and carrots which is a clear violation of Republic Act 10863 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act for misdeclaration of goods.

Valiente said the imported agricultural products were intercepted at the Mindanao Container Terminal sub-port in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

On July 4, 2022, lawyer Elvira Cruz, BOC-10 district collector, issued pre-lodgement control orders against the shipments through the CIIS CDO field station upon receipt of derogatory information from the Intelligence Division-Intelligence Group
