Courting the Muses at KampoJuan

All’s set for the Unang Tanghalan at Bukidnon this Saturday, May 11, 2019.

Tanghalan sa KampoJuan is a series of three cultural and culinary evenings at the KampoJuan Eco-Adventure Farm and Heritage Resort, Barangay Diklum, Manolo Fortich  celebrating and the Arts, Music, Culture and Cuisine of Northern Mindanao.

“Each cultural evening will begin with an exciting culinary adventure led by upcoming and esteemed local chefs and their delectable menus using local food and ingredients,” said Jonathan Cabrera, event organizer of the trail blazing cultural cum culinary experience.

The evenings will be capped by performances by award-winning Mindanao music, dance, and theatre artists including the exhibit of works by outstanding visual artists from around Northern Mindanao.

“We invite you to come and enjoy any or all three evenings to foster a deeper appreciation of the music, arts, culture and unique food/culinary traditions of our rich and diverse region,” said Dr. Neric Acosta, managing director of KampoJuan.

The UNANG TANGHALAN on May 11, 2019 features culinary and musical artists from Iligan:

Ardjani S. Fernando, Marc Christian Ong Consolacion and Gian Paulo Casiño will prepare their Rustic Gourmet menu of garden fresh produce and organic ingredients.

Arjani S. Fernando is the Head Chef at DAHUN and works for Head Chef at Balay sa Hardin, an integrated garden and a learning site for natural/organic farming systems advocating organic agriculture as a platform for fresh and nutritious farm food products and a training facility for organic farming systems.

Music will be provided by the Deus Caritas Youth Rondalla, an Iligan based string ensemble composed of children survivors of the devastating 2011 tropical storm Sendong who were trained by ethnic musicologist Frank Abellana Englis, who studied Ethnomusicology at Kent State University and Choral Conducting at Silliman University. The rondallas been instrumental in achieving resiliency for the children and in embracing the arts as a means to recovery and healing.

Another Iligan-based artist, singer, composer and pianist Erich Obach caps the evening with a multi-layered musical experience celebrating Original Pilipino Music with songs of Levi Celerio, Ryan Cayabyab, Willy Cruz and other Filipino musical geniuses. Erich Obach is a renowned musician and has performed to vast and varied audiences here and abroad over three decades.

The subsequent PANGALAWANG TANGHALA on May 2019 kicks off with a culinary adventure with French-trained Chef Maricar Urbano, mentored by Celebrity French Chef Herve’ Frerardand illustrating the balance between the science and artistry of cooking. Maricar’s cuisine is built on solid technique, balanced flavor, creativity and presentation.

Oro TeatroBulawanon will next feature the premier performance of Ang Paglaya an original play by Maia Fortich Poblete about the timeless story of a father-and-daughter relationship. Oro TeatroBulawanon is recipient of the 2018 Lambago Awards for Theatre, having performed plays to generate greater awareness on the realities of violence against women, women’s health and well-being.

 Liceo Folkloric Dance Troupe next showcases its award winning dances performances. The troupe has been a catalyst in promoting the diverse cultures of Mindanao in the Philippines and abroad. It has represented the country in the ASEAN Dance Festival Exposition in Brunei, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Today, it continues to share the wealth of Mindanao through its various road shows, and its captivating performances around the country and the world.

The series concludes with the Pangatlong Tanghalan on May 25 featuring Melbourne-educated and trained culinary enthusiast Jont Cabrera who will demonstrate his culinary innovations in blending Filipino and classical Italian cooking. From L’antipasto to mains and dessert, this will be an exciting culinary adventure in featuring local ingredients for Italian style of cooking.

This will be followed by the Sustainable Design exhibit of  Chris Gomez, a multidisciplinary creative and advocate showcasing his artworks and artistry through paintings, furniture, fashion and accessories.

Chris is a highly celebrated artist and has received awards and accolades for his designs at the Look of Style Awards 2014 by the British Council. His painting won the Grand Prize for the Water based Category in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence awards 2012 and was a finalist in the National Philippine Art Awards 2011. He also became a finalist at the China Asean Youth Artwork Creativity Contest in 2008 at Nanning, China before finally bagging the Award of Excellence in 2016.

Finally, the evening will be capped the eclectic choral music of the Youth for Culture and Arts Project (YCAP) community choir, led by Ms Mercibelle Barroso Abejuela. This Bukidnon-based chorale has performed in major cities in Europe, USA and Asia. A consistent grand slam winner in the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary School Chorale competitions, the YCAP will offer a repertoire of songs and music across many genres: ethnic/lumad, OPM/Original Pilipino Music, pop and classical.

For those who want to come earlier, you are welcome to enjoy Kampo Juan, named in honor of Dr. Juan Acosta – the patriarch of a patrician family who successfully navigated a career in politics, environment and scientific research. His wife Socorro served as mayor and representative of Bukidnon’s first district and son Neric is one of the country’s leading environmentalists. The Heritage House itself is worth the visit, but there are adventure sports galore also the young and young at heart can while away the time while waiting for the evening’s show.
