ILIGAN CITY —– A 55-year old man and his partner are facing attempted parricide charges after they were jailed for mauling the son’s 88-year old mother in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.
Captain Eric Logronio, chief of Kauswagan Municipal Police Station, identified the couple as Romeo Asuelo and his common-law wife Luz Escoto, who is also his first cousin.
The victim identified as Ignacia Asuelo, has been reportedly been suffering from memory loss for several years now, said Logronio.
“The neighbor went to our station to report that a senior citizen was being maltreated by her own son and his live-in partner. She reportedly witnessed the son hitting his mother with a plastic kabo (water dipper),” he added.
Logronio said the neighbor reported that the couple would frequently hit the victim because she defecated everywhere and could not understand simple instructions due to her dementia.
“Gi-ango ango na daw ingon nila,” Logronio said. (They said she has dementia)
The medical report indicates the victim sustained injuries and several bruises all over her body. She has now been taken custody by her niece in Lugait, Misamis Oriental.
The niece is the main complainant of the parricide case.
“A witness said the couple was heard several times saying they wanted the senior citizen to die so that they can get the P50,000 proceeds of her life insurance from a cooperative in Lugait,” Logronio said.
