Councilor Abaday wants City Gov’t to reward silver medalist Carlo Paalam P2-million

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – City Councilor Roger Abaday has filed a resolution which aims to give silver medalist Carlo Paalam, the ‘Pride of Cagayan de Oro,’ for bringing honor and pride, not only to the city but the whole country as well.

Administration City Councilor Abaday, in his resolution, stated that the funds for a said incentive can be taken from the P26-million sports fund of the City Council.

City Councilor Abaday also cited in his resolution that the Olympic silver medalist is given house and lot for his family in Cagayan de Oro.

Vice Mayor Kikang Uy also gave his support to the resolution aimed at giving a P2 Million incentive, but also clarified that the City Council has no power in its capacity, to provide house and lot to the family of Paalam as another incentive to the Olympic boxer.

Uy said such power to give a house and lot package to the boxer’s family ‘lies in the hands of Mayor Oscar S. Moreno.

The 23-year-old Paalam started his boxing career in Cagayan de Oro City when incumbent City Mayor Oscar Moreno opened the doors for budding athletes in boxing.

After the young boxer was mentored by the best boxing legends as a Philippine athlete, there is much improvement in Paalam’s style and strategy in boxing.

Now, the young pug not only uses his agility, power, and body conditioning, but he also uses smartness in mind to read the movements and maneuvers of his opponent before he executes his punching powers.

Paalam’s two impressive victories in Tokyo in the preliminaries are enough reasons to believe that he is in for the gold. Since legendary Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco bagged a silver in Atlanta in 1996, it was no longer followed by other victories in Olympic boxing history.

Meanwhile, in a press briefing on Wednesday, Mayor Moreno said the boxing team from Australia lauded the performance of Carlo Paalam and got interested in knowing, what they said, as a very successful grassroots level boxing program of the City Government.
