CNTs employ IEDs amid COVID-19 ceasefire declaration

Bayugan City, Agusan Del Sur (ADS) – 8th Special Forces Company of the 3rd Special Forces “Arrowhead” Battalion, upon acting on a report of concerned civilians, recovers two (2) pieces of 12 kilogram grapeshot pressurized type improvised anti-personnel mine employed by Communist NPA Terrorists (CNTs) 10 meters away from a brangay road at Purok 4, Barangay New Salem, Bayugan City today.

Earlier, the government declared unilateral ceasefire to allow AFP to shift its efforts to support the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-MEID) amid the COVID19 crisis nationwide. Yet, the CNTs take full advantage to cause casualties on government troops through tactical offensives despite the declaration of ceasefire.

The recovered pressurized type of IEDs can inflict a fatal damage to victims within an estimated 10- to 15 meter radius according to its specifications and assessment of an explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) expert.

“Pressurized type of IEDs are extremely dangerous than command detonated IEDs kasi matamaan  lang ng kaunti ng biktima ito at mapressure sa required amount of force ng IED ay sasabog na ito,” an EOD expert, said.

The community and the Army condemns the CNTs and the terroristic acts which violate and dishonor the International Humanitarian Laws and Human Rights laws through using banned anti-personnel mines landmines that cause severe or long term damage to the environment, superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering to potential victims.

“While we do our duty in COVID-19, the CNTs take undue advantage by targeting the govvernment troops. We are battling the COVID-19 but the fact is, real virus stronger than COVID are these Communist NPA Terrorists who corrupts the nation and takes advantage of the COVID crisis situation because it is a potential scenario for a violent revolution,” LTC Joey B Bayayan, 3SFBn Commanding Officer, said.

Meanwhile, Colonel Allan D Hambala, 401st Infantry Brigade Commander urges all units and the public to be vigilant because the Communist NPA Terrorists are known violators of ceasefire agreements.

“They are terrorists and know no laws and agreements. The COVID-19 crisis, if cannot be managed properly would be advantageous for them. We need the help and vigilance of everyone to cooperate with the procedures, checkpoints to stop the spread of the virus. In the same manner, we appeal to the public to report immediately the terrorist activities and the terrorists’ presence so we can act accordingly based on our constitutional mandate, “Colonel Hambala, said.
