CDO solon to hold workshop on children with special needs educ

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, of Cagayan de Oro City’s 2nd District, in collaboration with Portia Jurado, will hold a five-day seminar and workshop on the effectiveness of early identification, prevention, referral, and intervention in developmental disorders among children ages 3 to 9 as part of its thrust to increase public awareness and understanding in dealing with children with special needs and the provision of special education services.

Jurado, who has 12 years of experience caring for special needs children and teaching a self-contained multi-category class of 17 students in South Carolina, is poised to take the lead in the workshop.

The goal of the seminar-workshop, which will be held on March 20, 2023, is to help childcare service providers, special education teachers from public and private schools, and parents learn more about and get better at important special education processes.

The module will talk about the legal foundations of special education in the Philippines, issues related to developmental disorders, what causes developmental disorders and how to prevent them, the special education process, individual family service plans (IFSPs) and individual education plans (IEPs), as well as the differences between the two.

To make sure the event goes well, the office of Congressman Rodriguez will work with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-10 Regional Director Ramel Jamen and the Department of Education (DepEd)-Cagayan de Oro City Schools Division Superintendent Cherry Mae Limbaco to help plan and carry out the seminar-workshop.

Rodriguez thanked Jurado for helping his office with its very important advocacy work and for bringing back to Cagayan de Oro City the knowledge, skills, and experience she had gained in the field of special education.

He emphasized that both the state and community play a crucial role in ensuring that all children with special needs receive appropriate and effective care, and committed to filing a bill on the special process by which special education is planned, given particular attention, and designed to provide opportunities for individuals with special needs to reach their full potential.
