CDO, PBEd launch JobsNext project to hone youth’s skills

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–The City Government of Cagayan de Oro and the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) launched the JobsNext project, a training program designed to help youth develop needed skills for future jobs.

The launching was highlighted by the sealing of the partnership between the city government and PBEd, represented by Mayor Rolando Uy and PBEd Executive Director Justine Raagas, respectively.

Citing data released by the International Labor Organization in 2016 that around 49% of Filipinos will be at risk of not being employed due to automation, Raagas said they came up with the JobsNext project to mitigate the negative impacts of automation on the employability of Filipinos.

This is done through the provision of appropriate skills and lifelong learning to enable the young workforce to take on the jobs of the future.

Funded by the Citi Foundation, the project targets youth aged 18 to 25 years old. They can be out-of-school youth, studying youth, graduates, and working or non-working individuals.

During the launch, Mayor Rolando Uy said JobsNext is a good opportunity for the city and its youth. “So far, JobsNext is the first of its kind in Cagayan de Oro City. It is the first to deliver a skills training program for jobs of the future to ensure our youth are ready for the future,” he said.

Uy said JobsNext will provide training programs for Kagay-anon youth for jobs in IT, data analytics, and web services, among others.

“Once our youth are equipped with skills for these jobs, they will be able to reach more heights in the future. They will be able to have productive lives,” the mayor added.

100 Kagay-anon youth are initially identified to participate in the JobsNext project.

Simultaneous with the launch, PBEd also conducted an orientation on JobsNext among youth in Barangay Carmen. (APB/PIA-10)
