CDO clinches child-friendly award from PRRD

FOR its children’s development plan and initiatives using the framework of Jean Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development, the city government of Cagayan de Oro was given the Presidential Awardee of Search for Most Child Friendly City 2018- Highly Urbanized City Category.

The award was handed out by President Duterte himself to Mayor Oscar Moreno during ceremonies held Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Hall of Malacañan Palace.

Moreno joined executives from Carmona (Cavite), Sto. Tomas (La Union) and the cities of Tagaytay and Naga in receiving the award for their respective categories.

The Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities is conferred to LGUs in recognition of their important role in promoting childrens rights to survival, development, protection and participation, as well as ensuring child-friendly governance.

According to city information officer, the jurors were impressed with how the city government presented its various programs for children.

During the evaluation, the city government reported that it has 45 maternity care program centers – the most in the country.

“Health of the mother and the unborn child is a top priority project of this administration. Our nutrition program is a Crown awardee,” read part of the presentation.

City Hall also told the jurors that Cagayan de Oro has 209 existing child development centers with 203 teachers receiving P5,000 honorarium per month all from the budget coffers.

“They receive regular summer trainings to teachers conducted by the city’s top universities. We make sure that the children are handled by well capacitated personnel,” Rivera continued.

In its presentation, the city government also reported that Moreno’s administration has already built 649 elementary and secondary classrooms from 2016 to the present.

It also submitted a copy of the award handed down to it by the Regional Juvenile Justice and Welfare Committee for best practices in implementing the Juvenile Justice Welfare Act of 2006 due to the passage of two key ordinances – the Parental Responsibility Code and the Comprehensive Children Welfare Code of 2018.

“Our motto is serving the people the best way possible. This is our humble contribution to nation building,” Rivera said.
