DAVAO CITY – Cardinal Orlando Quevedo, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Cotabato on Saturday warned the public against falling prey to a scam using his name to solicit funds allegedly to pay for his hospital bills.
“Warning po. This is a scam. Galing daw sa akin,” Quevedo said of the text message purportedly coming from him, to raise funds for his alleged ‘triple heart (sic) bypass operation.”
The message reads: "Hi.How are you? Tried calling. I am so sorry to disturb you.I am really having second thoughts of messaging you kay maulaw gyud ko (I am ashamed). I just would like to personally ask for help for my hospital bill. I am at the moment scheduled for a triple heart bypass operation. Please keep this as a confidential message as only few people knows that I am about to undergo the surgery.”
The message continues with a note that the sender’s friend from General Santos City — and the name of the friend is mentioned — “also pledged to share. Hope to hear from you soon. Damo gid nga salamat and God bless!"
“If you receive anything like that,” the Cardinal said, “check first directly with (me) or with any priest at the Archbishop’s Residence in Cotabato City.”
