Camiguin 360 ultramarathon resumes with over 200 runners

CAMIGUIN (PIA)–Breaking the hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Local Government of Mambajao brings back the Camiguin 360 Ultra Marathon with 208 participants taking the roads of Mambajao, Mahinog, Guinsiliban, Sagay, and Catarman, April 1-2.

With no registration fee, the marathon is now in its eighth year since it started in 2014. It has different categories for male and female, relay, and age groups.
“Ang tumong ug tuyo gyud ani sa atong mayor nga si Mayor Yggy is ang pagpadayon sa kahimsug sa matag tao nga naa dili lang sa Camiguin pati na sa gawas sa isla. Ikaduha, kani siya nga event mao ni siya’y gitawag nga sports tourism pasra pag-entice sa atong mga turista nga muanhi diri sa Camiguin,” said Gilbert Grado, Mambajao municipal sports coordinator.

(The goal and intention of our mayor, Mayor Yggy, is to maintain the health of every person, not only in Camiguin but also outside the island. Second, this event is called sports tourism to entice our tourists to come to Camiguin)

A cash prize worth P20,000, P15,000, and P10,000 was given respectively to the first, second, and third place winners of the event, along with trophies, medals, and finisher shirts.

“Nagpreparar gyud ko ani kay gusto gyud mu-grand slam sa ani nga dula para ma-improve pud akong time. Niapil ko ani kay nindot pud ang daganan diri sa Camiguin,” said Bryan Quiamco, overall champion of the event from Iligan City.

(I really prepared for this because I really want to make a grand slam in this game and also improve my time. I joined this because the running here in Camiguin is also beautiful)

Quiamco says that people who want to join the ultramarathon should train for two to three months so they can see if they can handle such a long run.

The runners also liked that the marshals and medical team were there the whole time to make sure everyone was safe as they crossed the finish line.

Quiamco, with a 4 hour, 30 minute, and 12 second running time, was hailed as the overall champion of the event. Ramil Neri comes in second with 4 hours, 47 minutes, and 12 seconds of running time, and Rodel Salvane comes in third with a 4 hour, 57 minute, and 46 second running time.

Medics were stationed at Poblacion Mambajao and Poblacion, Sagay. Aid stations were also positioned at Poblacion, Tupsan, Naasag, and Agoho in Mambajao; San Miguel in Mahinog; Liong in Guinsiliban; Poblacion in Sagay; and Panghiawan and Catibac in Catarman. (RTP/PIA-10/Camiguin)
