Border security tightens, police to engage with local officials

CAMP ALAGAR, Cagayan de Oro City: The police regional command here on Tuesday directed all police units in the region to tighten border security and coordinate with local officials as part of security engagement.

P/Major Joanna Navarro, the police regional spokesperson, said that the engagement with public officials is part of the measures adopted to determine possible security threats on public officials.

She said that Police Regional Director Brig. Gen. Lawrence Coop has expressed alarm over the killing of public officials, the latest, was the attacked and the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and eight others in his residence in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

The spate of killing of elective public officials is a serious matter that the pokice should not take for granted, Navarro said citing Coop’s directives.

Navarro also cited the ambush of Gov. Mamintal Adiong, of Lanao del Sur, in Kalilangan, Bukidnon on Feb. 17, 2023. Although wounded, Adiong survived the slay try, but four of his bodyguards and a staff were killed.

The provinces of Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon and the city of Cagayan de Oro are bounded with boundaries where anybody could travel freely from one border to another, Navarro.

She said that aside from coordinating with local officials, Coop also directed law enforcers to tighten security in the regional, provincial, and city boundaries to  check on the transport of firearms and other criminal activities. -0-
