BIR to public: Report unscrupulous traders

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) here appealed to the public to report suspected traders of illicit cigarettes to the bureau.BIR Assistant Regional Director Rufo Ranario made the announcement during a press conference, January 25, following the start of the massive, synchronized crackdown on the illicit cigarette trade.

“This is a continuing activity of the BIR, so we need the assistance of everyone,” he said.Ranario said the enforcement is important for everyone because if the BIR isn’t allowed to collect taxes, they won’t be able to help pay for public infrastructure, services, and government workers’ salaries.

He also urged taxpayers not to patronize illicit cigarettes.

“We are wishing that one day we will have a kind of government where everyone is doing what is necessary and good for the country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Alubijid Barangay Poblacion Kagawad Felix Monares lauded the BIR for initiating a massive crackdown and conveyed his support for enforcement operations.

“Kami sa barangay ga-monitor pud mi og ing-ani aron makatabang pud mi sa government (we, in the barangay also monitor this kind of undertaking so that we can also help the government),” he said. (APB/PIA-10)
