BIR Normin begins crackdown of illicit cigarettes retailers

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Region 16 launched a nationwide enforcement campaign against illegal cigarette retailers in Misamis Oriental and Iligan City, January 25.

Assistant Regional Director Rufo Ranario was in charge of the operations in Misamis Oriental, while BIR Regional Director Emir Abutazil was in charge of the crackdown in Iligan City.

The National Bureau of Investigation and people from local government units that were involved helped with the enforcement work.

A total of 19 operations were conducted simultaneously during the kickoff: 13 in Barangays Suarez and Tibanga in Iligan City, one in El Salvador City, one in Alubijid town, three in Opol town, and one in Naawan town, Misamis Oriental.

As a result of the operations, a large volume of illicit cigarettes was confiscated.

Ranario said the illegal goods that were found will be used by BIR to file cases against people who are caught selling illegal cigarettes.

According to him, violators will either be fined or charged in court with tax evasion, depending on the gravity of the offense.

Ranario also clarified that prior to the actual enforcement activity, covert surveillance against the suspected retailers was undertaken by the concerned revenue district offices. (APB/PIA-10)
