CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The biggest state-of-the-art sports training center will soon have its place in the City of Golden Friendship.

Oscar "Boy" Dacoco, the city's sports consultant said it will definitely rise at a three hectare property of the city government in barangay Lumbia. The proposed Cagayan de Oro City Sports Training Center will be well-equipped with facilities such as rubberized track and field oval, football, softball and baseball fields, Olympic-standard size swimming pool, lawn tennis courts, archery range, boxing gym, athletes’ quarters (dormitory), canteen and parking spaces.

After Mayor Oscar Moreno's tremendous successes in establishing bigger school buildings in almost all the barangays in the city, the next big thing would be the proposed sports training center.

Mayor Oscar Moreno envisioned the establishment of this sports training center to give athletes better venue for solid training that will also result into bagging of local and international awards and recognition in the future.

"I hope to elevate into higher level the performance of elite athletes from Cagayan de Oro City and neighboring areas in the region, who will bring pride and honor to the city and Northern Mindanao in local, national and even international sporting events," the city mayor said.

To ensure a fully-sustained and scientific training approach, Moreno said, the city government plans to provide monthly stipend, food allowance, free education and dormitory accommodation so that the selected trainees-athletes could really concentrate and focus on their strenuous training.

Sports focal person Stephen ‘Pong’ Dacoco said the Philippine Sports Commission had already sent their technical experts who made the CDO sports training center’s perspective and 3D-format technical design as requested by Mayor Moreno, who sought the help of PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez.

The mayor, however said, the big project will need more funds from the local and national government.
