BFP Ozamiz campaigns for fire-free yuletide season

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Ozamiz City targets to keep families safe in celebrating Christmas and New Year.

BFP reminds the public to avoid buying low-quality Christmas lights sold at very cheap prices.

BFP City fire marshal Senior Inspector Wilfredo Dagatan said Christmas lights should be approved by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and should contain the required Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker.

“We would like to remind the public to be extra careful in buying Christmas lights that might turn out to be substandard,” he said.

Christmas lights should likewise not be placed near highly combustible objects such as curtains and paper and must also be kept out of children’s reach, he added.

BFP Ozamiz wants to conduct inspections of all business establishments in the city to make sure that the Christmas lights being sold complied with the safety standards of DTI.

“Don’t leave a fire unattended, put the fire out before going to bed, make sure candles are in stable and secure holders, and keep them away from combustible materials and small children. Never leave candles unattended, check holiday lights and replace cracked or broken bulbs. Don’t use lights that are not safe, and in case of fire and other emergencies,” Dagatan said citing ways to prevent fire during the holidays.

BFP Ozamiz also warned against using firecrackers during New Year festivities. (SMRN/PIA Misamis Occidental)
