Bataan Freedom Run caps Veterans Week celebration

THE Observance of the Philippine Veterans Week 2019 and 77th Araw ng Kagitingan formally ended with its last activity, the Bataan Freedom Run. The Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) hosted the annual event, which was attended by Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Administrator USec. Ernesto G. Carolina, who represented Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana as Guest of Honor and Speaker, on 14 April 2019 at the Provincial Capitol Building, Balanga, Bataan.
In his speech read by USec. Carolina, Sec. Lorenzana commended the PVB for organizing yet another successful event which garnered about 1,200 participants from the local communities of Bataan, Pampanga, and Tarlac, as well as descendants of Death March veterans. He also congratulated the PVAO for the success of the recently concluded Philippine Veterans Week and 77th Araw ng Kagitingan last April 5 – 11.
“The Bataan Death March may be a story of sacrifice, but it is one that we and all the generations to come must be made aware of,” said Sec. Lorenzana, “It is through this kind of awareness that we can further nurture our love for the country and our appreciation for the freedom our heroes gifted us.”
The Bataan Freedom Run was established in 2013 by the PVB as a way to commemorate the memories of the soldiers who endured the infamous Bataan Death March. The funds generated will be used for the maintenance and restoration of Bataan WWII historical markers. The event consists of 5K and 10K races, including 1K categories for kids and pets. Meanwhile, Ultramarathon participants joined the 21K and 42K marathons, spanning from Balanga to Mt. Samat, Dambana ng Kagitingan.
This year’s Bataan Freedom Run mixed things up a bit by adding a foam party to the start/finish line, which is fast becoming a trend in race events today. (PVAO)
