BARMM Police top brass orders probe on Sulu police director’s killing

BARMM Region – A top-ranking official of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-BARMM) has ordered a speedy investigation into the killing of Sulu Police Director Colonel Michael Bawayan, Jr at a police quarantine control checkpoint in Barangay Asturias, Jolo, around 4:20 p.m. on Friday.

BARMM Police Regional Office chief Brig Gen Eden Ugale said the killing of Sulu Police Director Colonel Michael Bawayan, Jr by his subordinate must be thoroughly investigated.

He said, while he condemns the unfortunate incident involving Col Bawayan and Staff Sgt Imran Jilah, genuine justice must be achieved to give peace of mind to everyone especially the aggrieved parties.

“The tragic loss of Col. Bawayan is undeniably heartbreaking to the entire police force of PRO-BARMM. We mourn for the loss of a comrade who died while performing his sworn duty. The PRO-BARMM considers this as an isolated incident. In no way will such an incident affect the sworn duty of PRO-BARMM personnel to serve and protect our people in the Bangsamoro region,” the top PNP official said.

Initial investigation disclosed that the suspect also died when shot by Bawayan’s escort. Both Bawayana and Jilah were having disagreements when Jilah suddenly grabbed his issued M14 rifle and allegedly shot PNP Official which caused Bawayan’s untimely demise.

The PNP top official’s escorts reportedly rushed him to the nearest hospital, but he didn’t make it, police investigators said.

The police investigators added that Col Bawayan was conducting inspection routines at a police quarantine control checkpoint in barangay Asturias in Jolo and he had heated arguments with his subordinate Jilah who was sporting long hair.

Suddenly, investigation continued, the PNP top official grabbed a pair of scissors and allegedly approached Jilah to cut his long hair. Unfortunately, the suspect resisted and instead open fire at the top police official.

General Ugale has directed the PRO-BARMM Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (BARMM-CIDG) to a conduct separate investigation into the shooting incident that killed the Sulu police director and also caused the life of his alleged shooter after he was also shot by Bawayan’s escorts. – PNA
