Actor Vhong Navarro released from prison cell after posting P1 million bail

by JOEL CALAMBA ESCOL, Managing Editor

After actor Vhong Navarro’s legal team posted a bail of P1-million for his temporary liberty, the actor was finally released yesterday (December 6) from Taguig City jail.

The legal team of the actor have successfully defended their client in proving that the evidence of guilt is not strong. Thus, the petition for bail was granted by the court.

Navarro’s wife Tanya was very thankful her husband was granted temporary liberty by the court.

Tanya claimed this is a very happy Christmas for the whole family because they will spend Christmas and the New Year with the actor and TV host Vhong Navarro.

Navarro left Taguig City jail yesterday before 6.p.m after his bail papers were completed and the P1 million bail was paid at the City Treasurer’s office in Taguig.

Earlier, Navarro’s lead counsel Atty Mallonga said the actor’s petition for bail can only be granted if the complainant Deniece Cornejo cannot present evidence that the guilt is strong.

However, the granting of the bail was not easy. It took them several hearings to prove to the court that Deniece Cornejo’s evidence of guilt was weak.

The Taguig Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 39 found inconsistencies on the affidavits of the complainant Deniece Cornejo.

Judge Datahan claimed in the decision that “the credibility of the complainant is the single most important issue in the prosecution in the rape case.”

She revealed that in Cornejo’s affidavit, there were many inconsistencies which were too material to ignore.

“Indeed, the notable inconsistencies in the testimony of the private complainant could not be simply brushed aside, considering that these delve into the elements of the offense charged,” Judge Datahan pointed out.

It was also noted that while the complainant claimed she was drugged, she testified she wasn’t sure about her allegations.

The judge said Cornejo’s actions after the alleged rape, most importantly the text messages she sent Navarro and the “preening at herself and giggling,” are all inconsistent with her claim of trauma or someone who experience stressful and painful ordeal.

Earlier, the actor was transferred to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Taguig after the court ordered him to transfer based on the petition from the Cornejo camp.

The actor’s transfer from the NBI detention to the BJMP Taguig was also based on the order issued by Judge Datahan.

The said transfer of Navarro was also made based on the motion of Cornejo’s camp that called for the immediate transfer of the actor, saying everyone should not have special treatment.
