METRO MANILA (MDN national news, June 22) – A Filipina maid who narrated her ordeal against the son of her employer in Kuwait went viral after she posted it on a social media site.
The Filipina was identified as Jessielyn Espanola, a Filipina domestic helper in Kuwait. She claimed she was beaten by the son of her employer, as she was accused of stealing the son’s necklace.
Earlier last year, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered to stop deployment in Kuwait of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) after the president received reports of maltreatment of many domestic helpers in Kuwait.
The president sent Senator Cayetano in Kuwait and rescued over 300 Filipina domestic helpers back to the country. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that under the amnesty program, more than 5,000 of around 10,000 undocumented Filipino migrant workers in Kuwait were repatriated.
“Ang batang siyang inaalagaan ko nuon ay siya pang bumugbog sa akin. Pinaratangan niya akong kumuha ng kuwintas niya,” Espanola said in between sobs. (The little kid that I cared before did this to me. He accused me of stealing his necklace)
She said she cannot believe how the kid she took care of in the past has the guts to disrespect her and maltreat her by beating.
Meanwhile, thru the help of social media site Facebook, where Espanola posted her problem, the Philippine embassy knew about the ordeal that Espanola experienced in the hands of her employer’s son and immediately rescued her.
In 2018, the mysterious death of a Filipina helper also happened in Kuwait which also renewed tensions between the Philippine Government and Kuwait. This resulted to the ban of sending Filipinos to said country.
Constancia Lago Dayag, a 47-year-old housemaid was still brought to the Al-Sabah hospital in Kuwait amid allegations the Filipina OFW was sexually abused and fatally beaten.###
